Super Mario Odyssey[a] is an upcoming platform video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch, currently set for release worldwide on October 27, 2017. As part of the main Super Mario series, the game returns to the primarily open-ended, exploration-based gameplay previously featured in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine.

Gameplay[edit]

Super Mario Odyssey puts players in the role of Mario as he travels across various kingdoms beyond the Mushroom Kingdom, traveling between them on a hat-shaped ship named "Odyssey".[1][2] The game returns to the freeform, exploration-based level design previously featured in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. The game also features levels inspired by real-world locations, such as the New York City–inspired level of "New Donk City".[3][4][5] Mario retains several of his classic platforming techniques, such as wall-jumping and ledge-grabbing.[3] A core feature of the game is Mario's ability to throw his cap, known as Cappy, which is used in various ways, such as for attacking enemies, using it to temporary possess them and take control, and activate objects.[6] Mario also has the ability to transform into various things, including a Tyrannosaurus Rex, a goomba, a cheep cheep, a tank, a taxi, and a realistically-proportioned human.[7][8] In contrast with most other Mario games, coins are primarily used as currency to buy clothing and collectables for Mario's ship.[6]Instead, the main collectables are known as "Power Moons", which are similar to the stars in Super Mario 64.[6][9]

Development[edit]

The game was first hinted at by producer Yoshiaki Koizumi in April 2014, who stated that a new 3D Mario game was in development.[10] Super Mario Odyssey was then teased when Nintendo released the announcement trailer for the Nintendo Switch on October 20, 2016.[11][12] The game was fully announced at the Nintendo Switch presentation on January 13, 2017, with series creator Shigeru Miyamoto stating that the game would "go back to the roots", appealing to a more core group of players than the more recent "casual-friendly" approach to previous Super Mario games.[13][14][15] Shortly after, gameplay footage was provided at a Japanese presentation.[16]

At Electronic Entertainment Expo 2017, the game's release date was revealed to be October 27, 2017.[17]

Super Mario Odyssey is an upcoming platform game for the Nintendo Switch set to release on October 27, 2017. It is the sixteenth title in the Super Mario series, the seventh original 3D Mario title, the eighth 3D Mario title overall, and the sixth 3D Mario title on a home console after Super Mario 3D World. The game has Mario leaving the Mushroom Kingdom to reach an unknown open world-like setting, like Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. This new world has been stated to bear resemblances to the real world[3].

Mario will maintain his moveset from previous 3D titles, including the Long JumpRollGround Pound, the Triple Jump and the Dive, the last of which hasn't appeared since Super Mario Sunshine. In addition, he will be wearing a different cap in this game, which has eyes, implying it may be alive. A new mechanic in the game allows Mario to throw this cap as if it was a boomerang, and he can also jump off of the cap in midair like a platform. Mario can also throw his hat onto certain objects to possess them, including enemies and inanimate objects, with the possessed character or object receiving Mario's cap and mustache. Judging by posters seen in the announcement trailer, it seems that the game's story will involve, at least in part, Mario preventing a forced marriage of Princess Peach to Bowser.[3] Mario's life meter also returns with three health, similar to Super Mario Galaxy. Additionally, there does not appear to be any lives, as Mario will instead lose ten Coins upon dying. There will also be a new amiibo line based on Super Mario Odyssey, with a formal Mario, Princess Peach, and Bowser, which will unlock more costumes. Other lines are also confirmed to be compatible.[4]

Here we go, off the rails
Don't you know it's time to raise our sails?
It's freedom like you never knew

    Moving fast, from the past,
Say the word, I'll be there in a flash
You could say my hat is off to you

Oh, we can zoom all the way to the moon,
From this brave wide wacky world,
Jump with me, grab coins with me, oh yeah!

It's time to jump up in the air, (Jump up in the air),
Jump up, don't be scared, (Jump up, don't be scared),
Jump up and your cares will soar away, (oohoohooh),
And if you don't pass through this world,
Don't fear to shed a teardrop
    I'll be your 1-Up Girl

So let's all jump up super high, (Jump up super high),
High up, in the sky, (High up in the sky),
    There's no power-up like dancing,
You know that you're my Super Star,
No one else can take me this far
    I'm making the switch,
    Get ready for this,
Ohh, ohh, let's do the Odyssey

    Odyssey, ya see (X7),
    Odyssey, Odyssey!

Spin the wheel, take a chance
Every journey starts a new romance
A new world's calling out to you
Take a turn, off the path
Find a new addition to the cast,
You know that any captain needs a crew

Take it in stride, don't you look side to side,
They're just different points of view
Jump with me, grab coins with me, Oh yeah!

Come on and jump up in the air, (Jump up in the air),
Jump without a care, (Jump without a care),
Jump up 'cause you know that I'll be there

And if you find you're short on attack,
Don't make a stop, just get back
    You're still our 1-Up Boy

So go on, straighten up your cap, (Straighten up your cap),
Let your toes begin to tap, (Toes begin to tap),
This rhythm is a ballad for you (oohoohooh)

Jump on it, you're the superstar
No one else can make it this far
    They compliment that 'stache,
    Now you've got panache
Ohh, ohh, let's do the Odyssey

It's time to jump up in the air, (Jump up in the air),
Jump up, don't be scared, (Jump up don't be scared),
Jump up and your cares will soar away, (oohoohooh),
And if you don't pass through this world,
Don't fear to shed a teardrop
    I'll be your 1-Up Girl

Now listen all you boys and girls, (All you boys and girls),
All around the world, (All around the world),
Don't be afraid to get up and move
You know that we're all superstars,
We're the ones who made it this far
Put a smile on that face,
    There's no time to waste,
